Segment Data Module

The Japan Analytics Segment Data Module provides the business line and geographic breakdowns for Revenue and Operating Income that are routinely disclosed in many companies Supplementary statements.

Japanese companies have been disclosing details of their business segments for over 25 years. Due to inconsistent disclosure and often frequent changes in segment names and business classification, segment information is not readily available in a comprehensive and accessible format and normally is only available in Japanese.

A number of companies have disclosed several dozen business segments over the years, often changing their structure when a particular segment starts losing money. To keep things simple and avoiding charts that look like plates of multi-colored spaghetti, we only provide data on the top 15 business and top 10 geographic segments ranked by sales over the period where segment information is provided.

For both Business and Geographical Segments, Annual Revenue, Revenue Breakdown, Operating Income and Operating Margin data are provided. The quarterly data are disclosed only cumulatively and therefore only Revenue Breakdown and Operating Margin charts are shown. If companies disclose segment data irregularly, the charts will show period dots rather than lines.

Note that full disclosure is not required and many companies do not provide any segment information or limit disclosure to just Revenue data.Where no data are available, the charts will state just that.

For non-Japanese users, a manual translation of the segment titles for all companies into English is provided.
